ADVANCED CERTIFICATIONS FOR TILE - Duration Varies
The Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT) is a set of nationally recognized certifications that recognize the importance of qualified craftworkers. Specialty areas of ACT certification includes, large format tile floors/substrate preparation; mud work; showers; and membranes. BLUEPRINT READING - 8 Hours
This course is a Trowel Trades specific blue print reading class. It is designed inexperienced as well as experienced Craftworkers. Whether you are interested in becoming a supervisor or just want to improve your skills, this course will get you on your way. This course will cover the architectural and structural drawings as well as related shop drawings.
CONSTRUCTION ORGANIZING MEMBERSHIP EDUCATION & TRAINING – 16 Hours (two days)
The objective is to educate our members why organizing skilled and qualified non-union workers is so critical to the future of our Union. Topics include but not limited to, history of our Union, why we need to organize qualified workers, how we organize workers and how BAC members may get involved.
CONCRETE FLATWORK FINISHER & TECHNICIAN - ACI CERTIFICATION - Duration Varies
ACI will grant certification only to those candidates who obtain a passing grade on the written examination PLUS either:
Possess 1,500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing* experience (approximately one year of regular full-time work) AND successfully complete the performance examination**, OR
Possess 4,500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing* experience (approximately three years of regular full-time work).
The two-hour written examination is closed-book and consists of approximately 50 multiple-choice questions. The passing grade for the written examination is 70%.
For Concrete Flatwork Technician: ACI will grant certification to those examinees who obtain a passing grade on the written examination. Individuals with Flatwork Technician certification can upgrade to full Flatwork Finisher status upon submittal and approval of sufficient work experience or successful completion of the ACI performance evaluation.

CONPROCO – MATRIX (MIMIC) STONE RESTORATION – 8 Hours
The Matrix training program allows applicators to do on-site color matching for mockup approvals. The Matrix fob set, has 72 physical swatches that reproduce the actual color and texture of the cured Matrix material. This greatly reduces time to choose the correct match.
FIRST AID, CPR AND AED - AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION - 4 Hours
Learn critical skills needed to respond to and manage a first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest emergency in the first few minutes until emergency medical services (EMS) arrives. Students learn skills such as how to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies. This course also teaches adult CPR and AED use.
INFECTION CONTROL RISK ASSESSMENT (ICRA) – 8 Hours
Contractors and workers that perform healthcare or other occupied facility and renovation construction need to understand the Infection Control Risk Assessment (ICRA) procedures to properly perform this work. CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training’s 8-hour ICRA Awareness training program provides the necessary information to understand and apply the ICRA procedures and examines the practical use of ICRA tools including containment, negative air, HEPA filtration, and work practice techniques. The training program uses a variety of adult education classroom activities to build upon participants’ experiences working in construction, maintenance, renovation, demolition, or healthcare facility environments.
MASONRY FLASHING UPGRADE - 4 Hours includes hands on activities, work attire required.
Learn the best practices for masonry flashing applications and demonstrate their understanding in a hands-on project applying flashing concepts.
IMI STRUCTURAL MASONRY GROUT CERTIFICATION - 4 Hours includes hands on activities, work attire required.
Students will learn the current Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC) Codes for structural masonry and self-consolidating grout. Attending this class will keep you apprised of current code requirements for testing/sampling and reinforcing steel for Allowable Stress & Strength Design (placement tolerances; ties, hooks, and anchor bolts). IMI Grout Certified installers are mandated in some project specifications.
JAHN MASONRY REPAIR INSTALLER CERTIFICATION - 24 Hours (3 Days Consecutively)
During the three-day workshop, you will learn traditional methods of masonry repair using Jahn Restoration Mortars. Workstations are set up using limestone to simulate a variety of jobsite conditions. Students will receive a graduation certificate and an authorized installer card upon course completion.
EPA RRP - LEAD RENOVATOR CERTIFICATION - 8 Hours
EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule (RRP Rule) requires that firms performing renovation, repair, and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities and pre-schools built before 1978 have their firm certified by EPA (or an EPA authorized state), use certified renovators who are trained by EPA-approved training providers and follow lead-safe work practices.
MIOSHA PART 2 MASONRY WALL BRACING - 2 Hours
Also known as Restricted Zone Training, you will learn the rules pertaining to the bracing of unsupported masonry walls exposed to wind during construction. Topics include; contractor responsibilities, training, restricted zone, & signing requirements; wind speed determination; initial & intermediate period requirements; wall bracing systems; and inspections. This is a MIOSHA mandated course for anyone who may enter the restricted zone of an unsupported masonry wall exposed to wind during construction: MIOSHA Part 2. Masonry Wall Bracing covering Construction Safety Standards R408.40201 - .40213.
NEW MINER - MINE SAFETY HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (MSHA) - 24-Hours (3 Days Consecutively)
New surface miners receive 24 hours of training in specified courses, including: the statutory rights of miners and their representatives under the Mine Act; the use of self-rescue and respiratory devices, where appropriate; hazard recognition; emergency procedures; electrical hazards; and First aid. 30 CFR part 46 & part 48 for Metal/Nonmetal Surface Mining.
MINE SAFETY HEALTH ADMINISTRATION (MSHA) - 8-Hour Refresher
Refresher training is provided every 12 months for all miners. You must complete the 24 New Miner training as a prerequisite.
MUST ONLINE SAFETY MODULES OR DRUG SCREEN
BAC Members in good standing should contact the BAC or IMTEF office to obtain a MUST Drug Test Authorization form. To complete online safety modules, go www.mustbsafe.com and enter your full SSN number as your username and first four digits of your SSN as your password.
OSHA OUTREACH TRAINING 10 & 30 (Live or Online)
The Outreach Training Program is a voluntary program. Its purpose is to promote workplace safety and health and to make workers more knowledgeable about workplace hazards and their rights. Outreach training does not fulfill the training requirements found in OSHA standards. Employers are responsible for providing additional training for their workers on specific hazards of their job as noted in many OSHA standards. A list of standards requiring training may be found in OSHA Publication 2254, Training Requirements in OSHA Standards and Training Guidelines [PDF].
OSHA 30 HOUR (four days)
The 30-hour training program is intended to provide workers with some safety responsibility a greater depth and variety of training. All outreach training is intended to cover an overview of the hazards a worker may encounter on a job site. Training emphasizes hazard identification, avoidance, control and prevention, not OSHA standards.
OSHA 10 HOUR (two half days)
The 10-hour training program is primarily intended for entry level workers. The OSHA Outreach Training Program provides training on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of workplace hazards. Outreach classes also provide overview information regarding OSHA, including workers' rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint.
OSHA ONLINE 10 or 30 HOUR
To request an online OSHA course, members must have an IU number and submit request via email to tom.ward@bricklayers.org . Please detail your request in the body of the email and include your full name and cell number.
PERMIT REQUIRED CONFINED SPACE - 16 Hours (two days) work attire required
This course includes extensive hands-on training in confined space entry and the use of PPE. Teaches workers about common hazards in confined spaces, and about the OSHA standard that addresses these hazards. Participants also learn about safe entry procedures, monitoring principles, entry permits, ventilation, personal protective equipment and the roles of the entrant, attendant, and entry supervisor.
POINTING/CLEANING/CAULKING FAMILIARIZATION & CROSSCRAFT TRAINING
Open to BAC members wishing to explore Masonry Restoration. Space is limited, contact Tom Ward to schedule lab time. Center open Monday-Friday 7:00am - 3:30pm
This course will familiarize the BAC members with the installation and removal of caulking, re-pointing masonry units, and operating a swing stage including classroom and hands-on participation.
QUALIFIED RIGGING & SIGNALING - 8 Hours
Employers must use qualified riggers during hoisting activities and whenever workers are within the fall zone while hooking, unhooking, guiding a load, or doing the initial connection of a load to a component or structure. Students will learn how to properly rig a load and demonstrate the ability to solve problems related to rigging loads (written exam). A signal person is required when the point of operation is not in full view of the operator, the operator’s view is obstructed in the direction the equipment is traveling, or it is determined that a signal person is needed. Students will learn the types of signals used at the worksite and demonstrate competency with an oral or written exam and a practical test.
QUANTITATIVE FIT TESTING - 30 Minutes
QNFT uses fit testing instrument(s) to provide quantitative, or numerical measurements of the amount of face seal leakage present when a given respirator is donned by a particular user.
SUPERVISOR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM - 16 Hours
Designed specifically for individuals responsible for the on-site, day-to-day supervision of masonry construction, IMI's Supervisor Certification Program (SCP) offers education and certification for current and potential supervisory personnel of signatory BAC masonry contractors. SCP 1 requires successful completion of 16 hours of instruction. Candidates learn the following core competencies: The Role of the Foreman, Productivity – Project Pace, Project Supervision, Personnel Management, The Construction Process, Professional Relationships, Layout – Site Control.
SUPPORTED SCAFFOLDING USER – 4 Hours
This course emphasizes on safety and hazard recognition awareness for supported fabricated frame scaffolding systems. Topics include Fall Protection and Electrical as outlined in the OSHA training requirement CFR 1926.454.
SUSPENDED SCAFFOLDING (SWING STAGE) COMPETENT PERSON - 8 Hours
Learn rigging practices, fall protection practices, electrical hazard awareness with an emphasis on the Suspended Scaffold Standards outlined in the OSHA CFR 1926. (Please note: it is still up to the employer to designate a Competent Person per site regardless of training.)
WELDING (AWS CERTIFICATION) MILD STEEL OR STAINLESS - 80 Hours (approximately)
Approximately 2 weeks or 80 hours of instruction. Students receive video and hands-on instruction in the basics of shielded metal arc welding to prepare them for a bend test for certification. All students must obtain a vertical-up certification in mild to mild steel to begin preparing for the stainless to mild steel certification.
